Chapter 10

Jake wanted to tell everyone that the party was over! He wanted to be with her, to wrap his hands around her body, and lose himself in her. There were too many people around and he wanted it over and done with and to be with her. He was so caught up in his explosive thoughts that he did not notice that Delia had sidled up next to him until he felt the touch of her fingers on his arm. He turned his head to look at her and his eyes narrowed.

“Delia.” His voice was curt as he shifted a little to give them some distance.

“I am here to apologize,” she said softly.

Jake’s eyes searched her face suspiciously. “For what?”

“For being such a world class bitch,” she said with a sigh. “I am sorry, Jake, but I let my jealousy get the better of me. You are not an easy man to get over.”

He inclined his head and studied her for a moment. “I am sorry too for giving you the impression that I was looking for something permanent.”

Delia was careful not to show him the frisson of rage that shivered through her body. He had not told her that it was permanent, but he had paid attention to her, made love to her the way no other man had done, and she had not been able to help herself. Now he was standing there looking at that damn bitch singing with his heart on his sleeve! She had never seen him look at her like that before and the hurt was unbearable! “You are right,” she said genially. She held out a slim white hand. “Truce?”

He reached out and clasped her hand before releasing it quickly as if he could not bear to be touched by her! “Truce.” He nodded with a slight smile, and to her humiliation, he chucked under the chin as if she was some damn teenager who had had a crush on him and he was being tolerant with her! At that moment, she hated him! “If you will excuse me?” Without waiting for an answer, he turned and walked away from her. She watched as he walked right up to her and took her hand in his. She had finished singing and the ranch hand who was manning the music selected an upbeat tempo. Delia felt the fiery jealousy burning through her gut as she watched them circling the floor and his arms around her. His head was bent to hers and the tender expression on his face defied expression! She jumped slightly as felt a hand on her arm and turned to find Bill standing next to her. “How about a dance?’

Delia smiled brightly and stepped into his arms, determined to mask her hurt. She could not very well stand there and let everyone notice how much she was hurt by his rejection. She had to pretend that she was okay with him seeing someone else, even if it killed her!

“You were amazing up there,” he murmured as he stared down at her.
